I hope that everyone has a safe and happy 4th of July holiday where we celebrate the birth of the United States.  While we may have our problems and faults we are still the place that others in the world try to reach.  Which says alot for our country.

We also have a new look to our site we hope you like the visual improvements and look for more to come along in the month of July.

There was a time in my life when we didn’t properly support our troops when politicals sent them into harms way on our behalf.  Luckily that time has passed and we now realize that it is our people in political office who send our young men and women into harms way, and it was not their choice to go.

This has brought back Memorial Day as a Essential Holiday to honor and remember those who served and those who didn’t survive serving our country when we sent them into harms way.

I have a personal interest in Memorial Day.  As a former Navy Medic who severed with the Marines as a combat medic, I am proud of the service I performed for my country when I was but a young man.  As a person I was greatly improved by my time as a service man.  I was taught not only that I was part of a TEAM of people and that as a TEAM we were far more effective than anyone of us were as individuals.  Yet as an INDIVIDUAL I could affect the effectiveness of the TEAM.  Regardless of being a sailor on board a ship, or as a Corpsman on duty with the Marines, its all about what are your talents that will not only save your life but that of others around you.  I was also taught leadership skills which carried me into a fairly successful life as a private business owner.

Nearly in my footsteps is my Daughter.  She too followed dad into the medical field.  First as a Certified Nurses Aid, and then as an EMT and now working in a hospital in the Intensive Care Unit.  She carries on with the service to others in her work, she is learning the leadership skills and also how to act on a situation before being told what to do.  Working in Emergency Medicine there are times where you must evaluate the situation and take appropriate action in order to save peoples lives.

But this was not about me, or my daughter, this is about ALL the service people who have served our country.  They all serve out of a desire to help the people of the US and to learn the kinds of things only the Military can teach you.

So to all our men and women who have served or are serving.  We Salute you this weekend and honor your dedication and desire to serve the people of the United States.   May those who are serving now return safely to their friends and family.  Those that have not and the families who have lost loved ones we send our heart felt condolences and hope that you understand They gave their life to protect yours and what we all believe in, Freedom.

THANK YOU SERVICE MEN AND WOMEN EVERYWHERE, EVERYAGE, EVERYTHING YOU DID FOR US… Without you who knows where we would be right now, it certainly wouldn’t be where we are today.

Enjoy the weekend and take a moment to remember those who serve.

At the current rate temperatures are rising, there could be at least a 30 percent net loss in land suitable to farm coffee in Mexico and Central America by 2050 forcing many farmers to turn to different crops, said Peter Laderach, a lead researcher at the International Center for Tropical Agriculture.

Laderach, whose organization is based in Colombia, is leading a team of scientists who started studying 7,000 small farms in Guatemala, Mexico, El Salvador and Nicaragua in 2009 and has based his estimate on data collected so far.

The researchers map the farms with satellite positioning devices to collect data on altitude and crop production. That information is then cross-referenced with climate change models to track how different areas will be affected by hotter weather and changes in rainfall.

Greenhouse gas emissions could heat the earth’s surface by between 1-6 degrees Celsius over the next 100 years, according to the United Nations, forcing farmers of all kinds of crops to change habits.

Therapeutic Opportunities for Caffeine in Alzheimer’s Disease and Other Neurodegenerative Disorders.
Although caffeine is the most widely consumed psychoactive drug worldwide, its potential beneficial effect for maintenance of proper brain functioning has only
recently begun to be adequately appreciated. This has mainly resulted from the convergence of conclusions from epidemiological studies and from fundamental research in animal models. Epidemiological studies first revealed an inverse association between the chronic consumption of caffeine and the incidence of Parkinson’s disease; this was paralleled by animal studies of Parkinson’s disease showing that caffeine prevented motor deficits as well as neurodegeneration. Later a few epidemiological studies showed that the consumption of moderate amounts of caffeine was inversely associated with the cognitive decline associated with aging as well as the incidence of Alzheimer’s disease.  Again, this was paralleled by animal studies showing that chronic caffeine administration prevented memory deterioration and neurodegeneration in animal models
of aging and of Alzheimer’s disease.
This evidence was the driving force for a meeting on Caffeine and the Brain
held in Lisbon on the 12–13 June 2009 joining several leading researchers dedicated to the effects of caffeine in the brain. Thanks to the generous sponsoring of Associac ao Industrial e Comercial do Caf´ and to the efforts of its director, Margarie da Ferreira, this gathering of clinical and fundamental
researchers from very different disciplines discussed issues ranging from molecular targets of caffeine, neurophysiological modifications and adaptations, to the potential mechanisms underlying the behavioral and neuroprotective actions of caffeine in distinct brain pathologies.

Interesting research on the effects of Caffeine.

Researchers from the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (Niddk) determined that patients with chronic hepatitis C virus (Hcv) who consumed more than 308 mg of caffeine daily had milder liver fibrosis. The daily amount of caffeine intake found to be beneficial is equivalent to 2.25 cups of regular coffee. Other sources of caffeine beyond coffee did not have the same therapeutic effect.

Details of this study are available in the January 2010 issue of Hepatology, a journal published by Wiley-Blackwell on behalf of the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases.

Dr. Apurva Modi, the lead author, and fellow researchers at the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases determined that for patients with chronic hepatitis C virus other sources of caffeine beyond coffee did not have the same therapeutic effect

Liver fibrosis, or scarring of the liver, is the second stage of liver disease, characterized by a degradation of liver function due to accumulated connective tissue.

From January 2006 to November 2008, all patients evaluated in the Liver Disease Branch of the National Institutes of Health were asked to complete a questionnaire to determine caffeine consumption. Questions were asked pertaining to: regular and diet soft drinks; regular and decaffeinated coffee; black, green, Chinese and herbal teas; cocoa and hot chocolate; caffeine-fortified drinks; chocolate candy; caffeine pills and medications with caffeine.

The study suggested that a beneficial effect requires caffeine consumption above a threshold of about 2 coffee-cup equivalents daily, but consumption of soda, green or black tea containing caffeine was not associated with reduced liver fibrosis.

2009 is turning out to be a bumper year with the British Botanical gardens discovering 2 new wild coffee plants.

According to the BBC:

Seven wild coffee species also feature on the list of new species, most of which were discovered in the mountains of northern Madagascar.

Two of the plants – Coffea ambongensis and Coffea boinensis – have the largest seeds of any coffee species, whose “beans” are more than twice the size of Arabica coffee (Coffea arabica), the main species used in commercial coffee production.

“Coffee is the world’s second most traded commodity, after oil, with at least 25 million farming families dependent on its production for their livelihoods,” explained RBG Kew’s coffee expert Aaron Davis.

“Yet, we still have much to learn about its wild relatives.”

This is awesome as so much coffee is under cultivation to discover two new varieties will certainly change the future of Gourmet Coffee.

We are giving Free Gourmet Coffee to our Troops
in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Starting the First of November 2009 we started collecting pot packs so we can start sending Coffee To Our Troops.

For any of you have been in the military, one of the few things you can always count on is a cup of Coffee. The quality may not be what you would like, but it was coffee.  Having been in the military as a combat medic for the US Marines I frankly couldn’t think of anything better than to know i would be coming back to than a GREAT POT OF GOURMET COFFEE.   Talk about a moral boost to know that when you get back to the base you got a great pot of gourmet coffee to brew up and enjoy.

For every pound of coffee we sell we are sending a Pot Pack of coffee to our troops in Iraq or Afghanistan.  If your in favor of the war or not, we must support out troops. Our way here is to offer a free pot of our gourmet coffee getting directly into the hands of our troops for every pound of coffee that we sell.

We look forward to sending our coffee over to our men and women in Iraq and Afghanistan so that they have something special to look forward to, especially at this time of year.
